Healthy Summer Habits

July 22, 2020

Everyone probably agrees that this has not felt like a normal summer, and for many, this has been shown in our daily routines. For example, work may look very different from the usual office location, and our recreational activities have changed because of social distancing.

The changes that we are adjusting to still should include opportunities for healthy habits.  During the summer, we can enjoy more time outside with longer daylight hours or beautiful evenings to be active.  Below are some tips to make sure you can get the most out of the time we still have left in the summer!

Stay Hydrated

The summer months can be hot and humid, so be sure to take a water bottle with you. Before you leave the house fill your water bottle with cold water or ice. No matter how long you are outside in the summer, it is important to replenish your body with water to stay hydrated.

Get Your Sleep

Sleep can be an under-rated component to your overall health. Even with longer days and the temptation to stay up later, getting enough rest is very beneficial for your mind and body to wake up feeling refreshed.

One helpful way to sleep better is to sleep with a fan on to keep the air circulating and you cool through the night.

Eat Well

Many fruit and veggies are in season during the summer – take advantage of these tasty foods! While it might be too late this year, next year consider planting a small garden to grow your own veggies. Stay cooled off with fresh fruits and veggies like watermelon, berries, and tomatoes! Salads are also a great way to enjoy garden fresh foods without heating up your home by using your oven. Be sure to check out your local farmers’ market for fresh produce and to support the people in your community!

Activity

With summer heat in full swing, spending time outside can feel like the last thing you want to do! Try waking up a bit earlier to enjoy the cooler temps before the sun starts heating up for the day. Right away in the morning is the perfect time to get your steps in while you walk the dog or catch up with a friend.

Wear Sunscreen

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial all year, but especially during the summer. Anytime you or a family member goes outside, consider putting sunscreen on your face, shoulders, and neck. Sunscreen should be applied to your skin 30 minutes prior to going outside to allow time for the sunscreen to settle. The experts also say to do some research to find the most effective sunscreen and to reapply at least every 2 hours.

Staying healthy and active for the rest of summer will help you feel grounded and more relaxed. I encourage you to implement a few of these tips above into your daily routine and experience the benefits of living a balanced and healthy summer!
