Outdoor Summer Tips for Pets

June 03, 2020

Most of us look forward to warmer weather that comes with summer and spending more time outdoors!  While you may love to spend time in the sun and protect yourself with sunscreen, it is also important to take protective measures to keep your pets safe and healthy.

Here are a few tips to help your furry family members stay cool when it is hot outside.

LIMIT EXERCISE WHEN IT IS HOT

Being aware of the temperature is important when you take your pet outside. Regular exercise for animals is still vital in the summer, so consider taking your pet outside during the cooler parts of the day. Try walking them before the sun is too hot or later in the day when the weather is cooling off.

PROVIDE ENOUGH WATER

Ensuring your pet has enough food and water is important to help them cool off and regain energy. Just as an iced lemonade or water cools humans off, pets need sufficient ways to do the same.  Consider checking their water bowl a few times a day and filling it when needed.

COOL PLACE TO REST

Having a place for your animal to lay down that is out of the sun can help keep them cool. Another option is to have a wet towel or a cooling pad for your pet to lay on. This will help keep their whole body at a comfortable temperature.

CAR SAFETY

The inside of cars heats up very quickly when the sun is beating down. Because of this, it is not safe to keep a dog inside a car during the summer.

If you do spend a lot of time outside with your pet, here are a few signs and reactions for overheating.

SIGNS OF OVERHEATING

  • Heavy Panting
  • Glazed Eyes
  • Weakness

WHAT TO DO FOR OVERHEATING

  • Take your pet inside
  • Pour lukewarm water on their body
  • Turn a fan on in the pets direction
  • Important: Do NOT make the animal drink too much water

Enjoy the summer months with your pet, just ensure their health and safety during the hot days!
