In Memory of Harold A. Simpson: A Multifamily Pioneer

June 23, 2026

In Memory of Harold A. Simpson

The multifamily industry lost one of its true pioneers with the passing of Harold A. Simpson on May 20, 2026, just two weeks shy of his 101st birthday. A visionary entrepreneur, Harold helped shape the modern apartment industry through his passion for real estate, development, and community building. Following his service in the Merchant Marines during World War II, he launched a career that would ultimately make him one of the largest apartment builders in the United States. Through decades of leadership, innovation, and perseverance, Harold helped create thousands of homes and laid the foundation for what would become Simpson Housing and the organizations that continue his legacy today.

"Harold Simpson was a true pioneer whose vision, integrity, and passion for creating communities helped shape both our company and the multifamily industry. We are grateful for the foundation he built, the values he instilled, and the lasting legacy that continues to inspire us every day." — Frank Rooney, CEO, Simpson Housing

Harold's talents led to great success that allowed him to live a life of giving generously to others—a philosophy that guided both his business success and his lifelong commitment to philanthropy. Beyond the communities he developed, Harold's legacy lives on in the people he mentored, the residents whose lives were enriched through quality housing, and the culture of excellence that continues to define the Simpson family of companies. As we reflect on his remarkable life and contributions, we honor a leader whose vision helped elevate the multifamily industry and whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
