What is GRESB?
GRESB (formerly Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) is an independent ESG benchmark that measures the environmental, social, and governance performance of real estate companies and funds worldwide. Institutional investors use GRESB results to compare how property owners and managers handle sustainability. In 2026, 2,382 real estate portfolios participated in the GRESB assessment.
How are GRESB star ratings calculated?
GRESB star ratings range from 1 to 5 and are based on how a participant's overall score ranks against all participants globally. Because ratings are relative, a company must keep pace with an improving global field to hold the same star level from year to year.
What did GRESB evaluate for Simpson Housing?
GRESB evaluated Simpson Housing across three areas:
- Environmental: energy use, water use, waste management, and greenhouse gas emissions across Simpson Housing communities
- Social: resident wellness, employee health and safety, and community engagement programs
- Governance: sustainability policies, leadership oversight, and how ESG goals are built into company strategy
The 2026 submission covered company-wide practices and 2025 utility and emissions data for every asset Simpson Housing fully or partially owns. You can find more on our initiatives on our Corporate Responsibility page.
Why does a GRESB rating matter for residents and investors?
A GRESB rating gives investors, partners, and residents an independent, third-party measure of a property company's sustainability performance. For Simpson Housing, maintaining a 3-star rating shows that sustainability practices are consistent and measurable year over year. GRESB results also help Simpson Housing benchmark against peers and identify specific areas to improve.
